The Pennsylvania 500 race has taken on a new name: GoBowling.com 400 (Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500). The other annual fixture in Pennsylvania, the Pocono 500, has also undergone a name change and is now the Gillette Fusion ProGlide 500.
The Pennsylvania 500 race has taken on a new name: Gobowling.com 400 and before this was called Pennsylvania 400, Good Sam RV Insurance 500.
The Pennsylvania 500 started in 1974 as the Purolator 500 and fans were treated to a victory by The King, Richard Petty. Petty won the race again in ’76 and then gave way to legends like Bill Elliot and Dale Earnhardt in the 1980s. Starting in 2007, the race was moved from its traditional July date into August, swapping dates with the Allstate 400 at The Brickyard.
In 2008, Sunoco, the official NASCAR fuel supplier, based in Pennsylvania, and the Philadelphia region of the American Red Cross, agreed to sponsorship of the race and charity events to benefit the American Red Cross South Pennsylvania-Philadelphia region.
Most commonly known simply as the Pennsylvania 500, the Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500 is the second of two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stock car races hosted at the famous Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pennsylvania
The 2.5 mile tri-oval track at Long Pond is one of the most unique racing facilities found on the Sprint Cup Series circuit, and with the longest straightaway of all the NASCAR tracks, the Pocono Raceway always promises to provide plenty of overtaking and lead changes.
